Pranayama, the fourth limb of yoga, involves conscious control of breath to influence the flow of prana (life force energy) in the body. These powerful breathing techniques can energize, calm, or balance your system depending on your needs.

Basic Pranayama Techniques

Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing): This balancing practice calms the mind and nervous system. Use your thumb to close your right nostril, inhale through left, then close left nostril with ring finger and exhale through right. Continue alternating.

Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath): An energizing technique involving short, forceful exhalations and passive inhalations. Great for morning practice to wake up the mind and body.

Bhramari (Bee Breath): Make a humming sound like a bee during exhalation. This practice is excellent for reducing anxiety and calming the mind before sleep.

Safety Considerations

Always practice pranayama on an empty stomach and in a well-ventilated space. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, return to normal breathing. Pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions should consult a qualified teacher before practicing advanced techniques.
