10 Essential Yoga Poses for Beginners
Starting a yoga practice can feel overwhelming with all the different poses and Sanskrit names. Here are 10 foundational poses that every beginner should master to build strength, flexibility, and body awareness.
Foundation Poses
Mountain Pose (Tadasana): The starting pose for all standing postures. Stand tall with feet together, weight evenly distributed, shoulders relaxed, and palms facing forward.
Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): A resting pose that stretches the entire body. Start on hands and knees, tuck toes, lift hips up and back, forming an inverted V shape.
Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I): A standing pose that builds leg strength and opens the hips. Step one foot back, bend front knee, and raise arms overhead.
Tree Pose (Vrksasana): A balancing pose that improves concentration and stability. Place one foot on the inner thigh of the standing leg and bring hands to heart center.
Child's Pose (Balasana): A resting pose for relaxation. Kneel on the floor, sit back on heels, and fold forward with arms extended or resting alongside the body.
Tips for Beginners
Remember that yoga is not about achieving perfect alignment but about listening to your body. Use props like blocks and straps, don't push through pain, and breathe deeply throughout your practice.
